Nematodes for peachtree borer

Steinernema carpocapsae · nematode
Against peachtree borer

USDA-ARS trials in Georgia peach orchards found Steinernema carpocapsae gave 88% control of peachtree borer larvae at 300,000 per tree, and in a later trial more than 80% control of larvae already in the tree with a handgun application, where chlorpyrifos failed. Autumn applications prevented 77–100% of infestations. The nematodes need moisture: the later trial covered the treated soil with a protective gel. For a few trees, UC IPM describes clearing the frass from each tunnel and injecting the suspension with a squeeze bottle.

Rate300,000 to 1 million infective juveniles per tree at the trunk base (USDA trials); or 1 million or more per ounce of water squirted into each tunnel (UC IPM)
TimingSpring on existing larvae, or late summer to autumn as prevention; in warm but not hot weather, at least 60 °F (UC IPM); repeat after 1–2 weeks for tunnel injections
Temperature14–34 °C; best 19–31 °C
