Entomopathogenic nematode for cutworms

Steinernema carpocapsae · nematode
Against cutworms

Cutworms hide in the thatch or a shallow burrow by day and come up at night to clip grass and seedlings at the soil line, which puts them squarely in the ambush zone of this nematode. UC IPM gives 25 million per 1,000 square feet for cutworms and armyworms in turf. UF/IFAS notes that steinernematid nematodes kill black cutworm larvae but normally need to be released to reach high levels, and that they depend on soil moisture. In beds, collars remain the first line of defence.

Rate25 million per 1,000 ft² (about 270,000 /m²) in turf (UC IPM); about 1 billion per acre (PNW544)
TimingEvening, onto warm (at least 60 °F) moist soil when larvae are found; irrigate several times over the next 2 weeks
Temperature14–34 °C; best 19–31 °C
