Nematodes for root maggots

Steinernema feltiae · nematode
Against root maggots

UMass reports that S. feltiae worked against cabbage maggot in trials even in soil at 50 °F. Cornell work found only 100,000 or more per plant prevented significant root loss, and a Belgian trial found spraying the plant trays placed the nematodes better than drenching the soil. Keep the soil moist. It is a supplement to row covers and timing, not a replacement.

Rate100,000–125,000 infective juveniles per transplant (UMass, from trials)
TimingOn the transplant tray before planting, or as a drench at planting; repeat if the fly arrives more than a week later
Temperature10–30 °C
