Nosema bait for grasshoppers

Nosema locustae (Paranosema locustae) · microbial grasshopper bait
Against grasshoppers

Documented because it is the biological product sold for grasshoppers, not because it works well in gardens. It infects only young nymphs, and the labels give 2–6 weeks before deaths begin. It does not infect all species equally. UC IPM says it is not likely to be effective in California home gardens, and in a 2019 lab trial it caused no deaths on its own within 14 days. It is an area-wide rangeland tool. In a garden, row covers, screening, poultry and hand-picking do more.

RateLabel rate — 1 lb per acre (Semaspore); the cancelled Nolo Bait home label gave at least 5 tsp per 100 sq ft of lawn or garden
TimingEarly in the season, when most grasshoppers are nymphs ½–¾ in long, on hatching beds and garden margins

Before you order

Wheat bran carrying spores of a microsporidian that infects grasshoppers that eat it. Spread it where young nymphs are hatching. It is slow and works only on the young stages, and UC IPM does not expect it to be effective in home gardens. How it works, how to tell it has established and the supplier list are on the full Nosema locustae (Paranosema locustae) profile.
