Rove beetles for shore flies

Dalotia coriaria · predatory rove beetle
Against shore flies

The beetle and its larvae hunt shore fly larvae in the media and around the algae they breed in, and Buglogical recommends its higher rate where shore flies are the problem. The limit is water: UMass says it will not work on larvae in standing water, where no soil predator reaches them. Clear the algae and fix drainage first, then release; a breeder box under the benches keeps numbers up.

Rate0.5–1 /sq ft (Buglogical, which uses 1 /sq ft for shore flies); other suppliers range 0.1–2
TimingEarly in the crop, before numbers build; onto wet media, matting and algae patches
Temperature65–80 °F (18–27 °C) best; suppliers quote 55–95 °F

Before you order

Shaken onto moist media, benches and algae patches in greenhouses and propagation, where adults and larvae hunt fungus gnat and shore fly larvae and thrips pupae, and settle in to breed. How it works, how to tell it has established and the supplier list are on the full Dalotia coriaria profile.
