Bt does not work on rose slugs

Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki · microbial insecticide
Against rose sawfly

Rose slugs look like small caterpillars, so Bt is the product people reach for, and it does not work. UC IPM, the University of Minnesota and Wisconsin Extension all state that Bacillus thuringiensis is not effective against sawfly larvae, because they are not the larvae of moths and butterflies. Count the prolegs: six pairs or more means a sawfly.

RateNone — Bt has no effect on sawfly larvae
TimingDo not use; hand-pick, hose off, or use insecticidal soap on young larvae instead

Before you order

A bacterium sprayed on leaves. Caterpillars that eat it stop feeding and die within a few days. It works only on the larvae of moths and butterflies, and has little or no effect on bees, lady beetles, lacewings or parasitic wasps. How it works, how to tell it has established and the supplier list are on the full Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki profile.
